Research and Technical Assistance Project

Sponsored by the Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) in the Department of Defense (DoD), the Voorhees Center developed and managed the Research and Technical Assistance (RTA) project from 2009 to 2014. The RTA project tracked and analyzed data for over 50 communities across the United States impacted by defense realignment. The purpose of the project was to provide up to date data and information to communities to help them better plan for and respond to base expansion or downsizing. Data indicators spanned a range of critical topics including local housing market conditions, economic trends, and demographic shifts, and were provided to communities and stakeholders on an ongoing basis. In addition to indicator tracking, the Voorhees Center authored a series of reports and issue briefs on topics of interest to communities and OEA. These included Local Economic Snapshots, Housing Inventory and Fit Guides, Commercial Real Estate Guides, an Education Snapshot, and Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Personnel Shifts and Regional Trends brief. Voorhees also provided technical assistance and specialized reports to OEA and impacted communities. The RTA Project allowed our partners to better understand local trends following these major defense realignment actions, and positioned them to better plan for and respond to such events going forward.
